Zentangle
Artist Statement-Zentangle
My artwork looks like a snail in front of fire coral underwater. I drew the snail on top of wavy sand and added light value dots. I did this in order to show the texture and look of the sand as well as to show that the snail and sand are in front. I then added light values of zentangle on the snail itself. For example, I made sure that the snail had a lot of white in comparison to the background: firecoral. This gave the effect that it was closer to the viewer than the rest of the artwork. For the shell of the snail I used a combination and pattern of horizontal, vertical, and curvy lines. This pattern gave a nice consistency to the shell and the overall snail. I used many different patterns for the fire coral. For each section I used a different pattern but they all had dark values. For example, I used shape, pattern, and value when I used little circles close together for dark values. In order to make something as small as small circles packed tightly together I had to use Ultra Fine Point Sharpies. The sharpies allowed for me to get a really dark black that contrasted well with the white paper as well as get tight areas that were hard to shade. I used Fine Point Sharpies in order to shade the larger areas of my artwork. In order to get consistency in my boxes in which my artwork is created in, I used a ruler to get the same measurements. I had many straight lines to create as well so the ruler was a great deal of help. Something that inspired me to do this artwork was nature. Us humans typically forget about all the aspects of nature and its beauty. I decided to chose a snail because it isn't a popular animal like a wolf, bear or snake and it deserves the same attention. My goal for this artwork was to finally become proud of my artwork. I was able to achieve this goal and become confident in my art. Being confident in my art has allowed me to enjoy art and be more open to the ideas of art. When making this artwork I learned that it's completely fine to make mistakes in art because new ideas can spur from a mistake. My artwork is not what I expected it to be because it came out better than I expected. I started this project with zero confidence but as I continued I realized how much I was proud of the final product. This piece really made me become more creative and therefore I will brainstorm as many ideas as possible for future artworks.
